Question: I was recently diagnosed with DCIS and I underwent excision and am about to start radiation. My report says I also have “cancerization of lobules” — does this mean I also have lobular cancer and ductal cancer? My doctor told me there was no invasive cancer. Help?
Answer: Your doctor is correct–from what you are telling me there is no indication of invasion based on that report. The ducts and lobules of the breast are directly connected. Sometimes ductal carcinoma in situ travels “back” into the lobules and that is where the term “cancerization of lobules” comes from. Lobular carcinoma in situ can also extend “up” into ducts. None of this means the cells have invaded so stick with your treatment plan. I wish you well.
